Aswad are one of Britain's finest and long-lasting reggae groups,
starting out in the mid-1970's they began to shine throughout the
1980's, releasing some high quality material and peaking in the early
1990's.
The group was originally made up of Brinsley Forde, Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye, Donald Griffiths, George Oban and Courtney Hemmings. Later the group added Tony "Gad" Robinson.
They earned a reputation as fine session players, backing Burning Spear during his performance at the Rainbow Theatre in London in 1977 which was captured for the album release "Burning Spear - Live".
Aswad's music was hugely popular amongst the West Indian communities of the UK because unlike Jamaican reggae their songs lyrics dealth with the experiences of black youths growing up in the UK.
Aswad originally signed with Island Records subsidary label Mango for their early releases, later the group recorded for Colombia where they released the quality albums "New Chapter" and "Not Satisfied" in the early 1980's.
Their 1988 single "Don't Turn Around" reached number one in the UK singles chart, the group toured frequently including visits to Jamaica,
West Africa, Japan and Israel.
In 1994 the single "Shine" received heavy radio airplay and reached number 5 in the UK charts.
In recent times the line-up of Aswad has changed but the group continues to release great quality material such as 2009's "City Lock" album. Brinsley Forde was appointed Member Of The Order Of The British Empire (MBE) in 2015 honours for his services to the arts.
