If you've never heard the music of SoCal reggae heavyweights Rebelution, it's time to crawl out from under your rock and find a sunny spot on the beach. On their fourth album, Count Me In, the band has honed their sound to a pristine, polished take on reggae that should be getting played on radio stations across North America this summer.

All the elements that make Bob Marley's music so universally embraced the world over play equally well in favour for Rebelution. Punchy horn sections, wailing organ flourishes, and the tightest rhythm section this side of Kingston, Jamaica allow the band to deliver socially conscious lyrics atop a foundation of easy-going instrumentals that lull the listener into a state of elevated consciousness.

Reggae is easily one of the most challenging genres to remain relevant in, and Rebelution have successfully managed to keep themselves from being labeled as a one-size-fits-all reggae act by incorporating increasingly diverse musical elements into their songwriting. For instance, standout slow-jam "Fade Away" has more in common with mid-'90s alternative rock than anything typically associated with reggae.

However, the guest appearances found on Count Me In keep the band's musical roots and street cred firmly in tact, with Collie Buddz guesting on "Hate To Be The One" and Don Carlos lending a hand on the genre-affirming "Roots Reggae Music." The members of Rebelution cite both musicians as personal inspirations for the band, so clearly they're doing something right when they are standing on the shoulders of giants, and those very same giants are standing right next to them patting them on the back.

In the end, what makes Rebelution's music connect with listeners is the personal and totally unpretentious nature of the songs. In an era of twenty-seven different sub-genres of indie (from shoe-gaze to chill-wave), it's nice to know that some things never change: reggae is reggae wherever you are on the planet, and it always sounds good at a party with a beer in your hand.

This summer, take a tip from Rebelution to de-stress your life: find a beach, stop worrying about your bills and your job, and listen to Count Me In until all your problems wash away with the tide.
