Saltwater Messenger is the 6th album from O-shen, after his breakthrough into the Pacific Islands music scene in 1999.
O-shen is internationally recognized for his ground-breaking blend of Reggae, Rap and Hip Hop. Woven throughout his music is the fascinating use of the tribal languages of the islands.
He continues to blaze new trails in the World music scene, while remaining true to his roots in the paradises of Papua New Guinea and Hawaii. This is O-shen’s first predominantly English album, recorded on the in the United States and opening up his music and important messages to the English-speaking world.
Saltwater Messenger is an album that will appeal to the hearts of both young and old, and will transport the listener to places unimaginable, as in the song My Mind.
In titled tracks Human Traffic, Bully - Bully and Rainforest Nation, O-shen raises the consciousness of important issues. O-shen is a true freedom fighter, whose big heart bares his soul in Freedom Fighter and Cold Hearted.

My first roommate in seminary introduced me to O-Shen. He's a musician from Papua New Guinea, and his music is primarily reggae with a healthy bit of hip-hop thrown in. Nate, whose girlfriend was from PNG, would listen to O-Shen pretty frequently, right around the time I really started to listening Bob Marley, so it listening to reggae together was somewhat of a bonding experience for us.

As for the album itself, I think it's a fairly strong album. The album starts off strong with "1 Rebel", an anti-war, anti-corruption, anti-colonialism song. However, it then leads into the terrible hip-hop song "Girls", but improves with the hip-hop/reggae song Ku Mai, and the rest of the album is very strong.

O-Shen's blend of reggae and hip-hop is impressive, as it flows together rather well. His beats are solid, combining traditional instruments with modern drum machines and turntable scratching. O-Shen is a great singer, and a fairly solid rapper.
Lyrically, O-Shen deals with two themes: girls and politics. His songs about girls largely deal with searching for love and dealing with heartbreak. His political songs are especially fascinating, as they present a perspective that is non-american and non-western.
Frankly, the lyrics are anti-American, specifically anti-American foreign policy. O-Shen is particularly critical of war, pointing out that the money spent on war could instead go towards helping those in poverty, and that war violates the universal kinship that humanity shares.

He is also critical of American culture, on two points in particular: the "ghetto culture" of american hip-hop, and the criminalization of marijuana, each of which has a song dedicated to the topic ("Never Seen a Ghetto" and "Legalize the Herb", respectively). Also of note is that O-Shen regularly infuses his music with his native language, loosely known as "Pidgin", and as I understand it was one of the first musicians to rap in his native language.

I think overall, this is a very strong album, and one I particularly enjoy listening to. I'd recommend this especially to fans of reggae, but to fans of hip-hop who are looking for something new.
